PUBG, short for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, is a popular online multiplayer battle royale game developed and published by PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of South Korean video game company Bluehole. The game was first released for Microsoft Windows via Steam’s early access beta program in March 2017, with a full release in December 2017. Later, PUBG was also made available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and mobile platforms (iOS and Android).
In PUBG, up to 100 players parachute onto an island or map, where they search for weapons, vehicles, and equipment while battling it out to be the last person or team standing. The playable area of the map gradually decreases over time, forcing the remaining players into a smaller zone to encourage encounters and combat. The game features various maps and game modes, including solo, duo, and squad modes.
PUBG is widely credited for popularizing the battle royale genre in the gaming industry, inspiring many other games like Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone. It has sold millions of copies and enjoys a large, dedicated player base, with an active esports scene that features regional and international tournaments.
